COUNSELORS :: BRAD CAVANAGH

Brad is a Licensed Independent Social Worker in Iowa. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Social Work from the University of Iowa, and his Master of Social Work Degree from Saint Louis University.

Brad has been working in the social work field since 1998, when he spent a summer in college working two jobs in Dubuque: one as a youth care worker at Hillcrest Family Services, and one as a Certified Nurse Aide at ManorCare. Following this summer, Brad focused on working with children and families for the rest of his undergraduate studies, and worked in both residential treatment for adolescents, and Early Head Start following graduation.

In 2001, Brad moved to St. Louis, Missouri to attend graduate school at Saint Louis University. Throughout graduate school and after, Brad worked with a wide variety of diverse client populations in non-profit programs for children and families, the school system, and the United Way, and taught in the Human Services department at St. Louis Community College.

In 2004, Brad returned to working with older adults as the social worker for a large skilled nursing rehab facility in St. Louis. It was there that he discovered that this fast-growing population is also one of the most underserved when it comes to mental health services.

In 2006, Brad joined Pathways for Aging, a private practice in St. Louis that focuses entirely on providing mental health counseling and geriatric care management services to older adults and their families in their own homes. As the Operations Manager and a full-time counselor, Brad helped Pathways for Aging become the premier counseling and care management service for older adults in the St. Louis area, serving seniors in over 50 senior living facilities, and caregivers and family members throughout the region.

After 7 years in St. Louis, Brad returned to his hometown of Dubuque in late 2008 and joined Crossroads Counseling Center. Brad will continue his focus on counseling older adults and their families, with an awareness of the unique needs and circumstances of the aging population. He works full-time at the center, and provides services in the office and through home visits for individuals unable to travel. Brad also provides individual, couples, and family counseling for adults ages 18 and over.

Brad is happy to be an Iowan once again, and looks forward to getting involved in the community. Brad enjoys spending time with his wife, baby boy, and his extended family. With any free time he has left, you may see Brad running across town just for fun, playing the drums at a local music venue, or cheering for the Hawkeyes on any given Saturday.
