COUNSELORS :: TARA SMITH

Tara Smith is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Iowa and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Community Health Education from the University of Illinois and a Masters of Science in Counselor Education from Western Illinois University.
Tara began her career in 1999 working in the Rock Island County school district as a health educator, teaching various topics, some of which included sex education, nutrition, and drug abuse. Tara also taught a class called "Mom's in Motion" for pregnant teens at a local high school. The class was designed to help prepare pregnant teens for the realities of parenting.
In 2001, Tara began work at Family Resources, Inc as a health educator for the Rape Sexual Assault Program. In this position, Tara facilitated workshops for preschool through high school students on topics relating to sexual abuse/assault. This position led to Tara's first counseling experience as a therapist working with children and adolescents dealing with sexual abuse, sexual assault or rape. Tara also facilitated several groups within schools for students experiencing these issues.
In 2004, Tara began working for Catholic Charities as an intern for the counseling program and was hired in 2005. During her time at Catholic Charities Tara counseled a variety of age groups. Tara was in charge of building rapport with the school systems and developing groups for adolescents dealing with various issues. Tara implemented several different groups in the grade schools as well as the junior high schools.
In 2008, Tara was relocated to the Dubuque area and began working at FHN Family Counseling Center in Galena. This opportunity allowed Tara to work again with a variety of clients as well as explore more chronic mental health issues. Tara has a special interest in the adolescent population and the issues they and their families face.
